Frequently Asked Questions

my jewellery valuation skipton Blackburn Halifax Middleton Manchester Stockport Wilmslow

Why do I need a jewellery valuation?

Some people get their jewellery valued just to find out "how much is my diamond ring worth". But most people do it because their insurance company requires it.

The Insurance company make you responsible to make sure your jewellery and watches are valued correctly.

If you ever need to make a claim because something is lost or stolen, the insurance company will ask if you have proof it existed, like receipts, photos, or a valuation report.

If you don’t have any proof, it can be harder to make a claim. In some cases, your jewellery might not be covered at all.

Without documentation it may place your claim at risk.

As dependant upon your policy, without proof of ownership you may not be covered or even worse, underinsured.

Do I Need A Valuation For Insurance?

This is an often asked question.

If you ever had to make an insurance claim, could you replace your lost items within your cover?

Most policies cover individual items at £2,500.00 each with a limit of £12,500.00 total, so if you have more than 5 items worth £2,500.00 each or more, then you cant replace them.

The retail value of Gold has skyrocketed in the last 5 years.

That beautiful 9ct gold necklace, bought for Christmas in 2020 costing £1,000.00, Would now cost over £2,000.00 to replace!

Diamond and gemstone values also change, sometimes they drop but mostly they increase as the years go by, only look in a jewellers window to see how your engagment ring costs so much more than it did 10 years ago!

Can you replace your jewellery with the insurance cover that you have, 70% of households are under-insured and lose out in a claim.

FAQ.

Q: What is a jewellery valuation?

A: A jewellery valuation is an official document prepared by a qualified expert that records the full details of your item, including its materials, weight, quality, condition, and current market value. It is legally recognised and most commonly used for insurance cover, probate administration, family law proceedings, or to understand the value of items you intend to sell or gift.

Q: What is the difference between an insurance valuation and a probate valuation?

A: An insurance valuation states the cost to replace your item brand new or with one of identical specification, which is what insurers require to settle claims fairly. A probate valuation reflects the estimated price the item would achieve if sold on the open market at the relevant date, which is the figure required for tax and legal purposes. The values are often different, so it is important to specify which type you need.

Q: What types of valuations do you provide?

A: We offer specialist valuations tailored to your specific needs:

  • Insurance Valuations: Calculates the cost to replace your item with one of identical quality and specification — accepted by all major UK insurers.
  • Probate Valuations: Prepared specifically for HMRC and legal purposes, reflecting the open market value at the date of death.
  • Resale Valuations: Provides an accurate estimate of what you could reasonably expect to achieve if selling your item privately or through trade channels.
  • Family Law Valuations: Independent, court-recognised reports used during divorce or asset division proceedings.
  • Revaluations: Updated reports to reflect changes in metal or gemstone prices, recommended every 2–3 years.

Q: How Jewellery Valuation Works (Step-by-Step Guide)

Jewellery valuation is a structured process involving inspection, gemstone grading, market research, and formal documentation to determine accurate value for insurance or legal use.

Step 1: Inspection

Each item is examined for:

  • Metal type (gold, platinum, silver)
  • Gemstones present
  • Hallmarks and maker’s marks.

Step 2: Gemstone grading

Gemstones are evaluated using the 4Cs:

  • Cut
  • Colour
  • Clarity
  • Carat weight

This determines overall quality and market value.

Step 3: Market analysis

The valuer researches current UK market conditions for:

  • Precious metals
  • Gemstones
  • Comparable jewellery items

This ensures valuation reflects real-time market conditions.

Step 4: Valuation report creation

A formal report is produced including:

  • Detailed item descriptions
  • High-resolution photographs
  • Individual item valuations
  • Purpose-specific valuation type (insurance or probate).

Step 5: Certification

The client receives a certified valuation document suitable for:

  • Insurance providers
  • Legal probate processes
  • Personal asset records.

Q: What happens during a home visit?

A: Your valuer will come to your home or chosen location at a time that suits you. Your items remain in your sight at all times throughout the assessment — we never remove items from your premises.

We will examine each piece, take clear photographs, record all details, and discuss any observations (such as worn settings or loose stones).

You will receive your full valuation report both as a digital PDF and a printed hard copy within the advised time period.

Q: How much does a valuation cost?

  •  A: We use clear, fixed pricing with no hidden charges and no fees based on the value of your items — this is considered best ethical practice within the industry.

  • Home visit valuations: Pricing is based on an hourly system, you only pay for the actual working time with no extra travel costs within our service area.
  • Online valuations: £45 per item,  £50 for watches, with certain models to be negotiated.
  • Revaluations or updates to existing reports: £25 per item reducing to £15 per item for larger portfolio.

Contact us for a personalised quote based on your requirements.

  • Other Valuers can charge on a number of items basis.

Sometimes quoting £80 for the first item and £55 every item there after, plus a fee for the report document and an additional fee or percentage of the value of an item if it exceeds a value or size of gemstone.

Plus an additional charge for visiting at your home and/or travelling expenses.

  • it is also not unknown for some valuers to charge a percentage of the overall value of the jewellery report, this is unsuitable as it can be biased and lead to over inflating values, also you will not be aware of the final fee until the work has been competed
